The rumored OpenAI smart speaker could mark OpenAI’s first major step into consumer hardware. According to a report from The Verge, the company is developing a smart speaker with a built-in camera powered by advanced AI.
However, this news is not surprising; last May, OpenAI acquired John Ive’s AI startup io for $6.4 billion.
What we know so far about OpenAI’s ChatGPT Integrated Smart Speaker
- Expected cost around $200-$300
- Built-in camera
- Could recognize objects and conversation
- Likely to be integrated with ChatGPT’s AI capabilities
- Not expected to launch before 2027.
There are also mentions of AI-powered smart glasses and even a smart lamp in development. However, official confirmation is yet to be released. This move implies that OpenAI is no longer building software only.
Why This Is Bigger Than Just Another Smart Speaker
The smart speaker market is not new; Amazon Echo and Google Nest have already been in the market. But those devices are assistants. A ChatGPT-powered speaker would be something else entirely.
Instead of:
“Set a timer.”You could say:
“Summarize today’s news in 60 seconds.”
“Explain this math problem to my kid.”
“Help me plan a week of high-protein meals.”
“Look at this object — what is it?”
That’s not voice commands. That’s ambient intelligence. Entering hardware now makes strategic sense. Right now, ChatGPT lives inside apps, and smart assistant seems outdated. It is logical for OpenAI to own its device, ecosystem, and data pipeline. To control user experience, software dominance is not enough anymore.
